Spotted
The Lucifer Hummingbird is a striking hummingbird recognized by the male's brilliant magenta gorget and a distinctively decurved bill. It is found in arid regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico.
Where to spot
Inhabits arid scrubland, desert canyons, and open woodlands, particularly favoring areas with agave and other large flowering succulents. Its range extends across the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) and much of central Mexico.
How to spot
Look for its small size and the male's brilliant, flashing magenta gorget. The decurved (downcurved) bill is a key identification feature for both sexes. Observe them feeding at large flowers or visiting hummingbird feeders in appropriate habitats. Listen for their distinctive calls.
When to spot
Most active in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for nectar. It is migratory in the United States, present during warmer months (spring to fall), and a year-round resident in parts of Mexico.
