Spotted
The Lesser White-fronted Goose is a small goose, similar in appearance to the Greater White-fronted Goose but noticeably smaller, with a more pronounced white blaze extending up onto its forehead.
Where to spot
Breeds in Arctic Eurasia, with a few fragmented populations, and winters in southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Look for them in open tundra, wetlands, and agricultural fields.
How to spot
Careful distinction from Greater White-fronted Goose is key. Look for its smaller size, more prominent white blaze reaching higher on the forehead, and a bright yellow eye-ring (visible in adults). Its call is also higher-pitched.
When to spot
Best observed during migration periods (autumn and spring) and in their wintering grounds (October to March). Observing them on breeding grounds is challenging due to their rarity and remote locations.
