Spotted
The Lesser Hoopoe-lark is a smaller counterpart to the Greater Hoopoe-lark, found in arid and semi-arid regions of the Horn of Africa. It also possesses a decurved bill and distinctive flight.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid grasslands, stony plains, and scrubland in the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya).
How to spot
Scan open, barren ground. Look for its characteristic hoopee-like flight pattern. Differentiate from Greater Hoopoe-lark by size, bill length, and range.
When to spot
Observable year-round, typically most active during the cooler morning and late afternoon hours.
While similar in appearance to its larger relative, the Lesser Hoopoe-lark has a shorter bill and more uniform plumage, adapting to slightly different desert environments.
