Where to spot
Common in open, treeless steppes, grasslands, and agricultural plains across Southern Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia. Partially migratory, with southern populations being more sedentary.
How to spot
Look for its large size, stocky appearance, and the two prominent black patches on the sides of its upper breast. Its plumage is generally streaky brown. Listen for its far-carrying, rich, and varied song, often delivered during an impressive soaring display flight.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the breeding season from spring through summer. Migratory individuals can be seen during spring and autumn passage.
