Spotted
A medium-sized black-headed gull named for its distinctive, rather raucous "ha-ha-ha" call. It's a common sight along coastal areas of the Americas.
Where to spot
Widely distributed along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas, breeding from southeastern Canada down to northern South America. Found on beaches, estuaries, marshes, and sometimes inland.
How to spot
Identify by its solid black head (in breeding plumage), dark gray back, and black wingtips without white mirrors. Listen for its characteristic laughing call. In non-breeding plumage, it has a smudgy dark gray hindneck and ear patch.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in much of its tropical and subtropical range. Migratory populations are best seen during spring and fall.
