The Large Ground-Finch is one of the largest and most robust of Darwin's Finches, endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is immediately recognizable by its exceptionally massive, deep bill, adapted for crushing large, hard seeds.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Galápagos Islands, found on several major islands including Isabela, Fernandina, Santiago, Genovesa, and Santa Cruz. Prefers arid lowland habitats with thorny scrub.
How to spot
Look for its large size and distinctively huge, robust bill. Males are black, females streaky brown. Observe its powerful movements as it cracks open seeds on the ground. Listen for its deep, buzzing song, 'churr-churr-churr.'
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during early mornings when foraging activity is high.

Its powerful bill is capable of cracking open the toughest seeds and nuts found in its arid environment, making it a specialized feeder that faces little competition for these resources.
