Where to spot
Found in humid tropical lowland and foothill forests along the eastern slopes of the Andes, from Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru.
How to spot
Look for its tiny size and busy foraging on thin branches and vines. Listen for its high-pitched, rapid 'tseet-tseet-tseet' calls or soft, rapid drumming. Binoculars are essential to discern its subtle plumage patterns.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most active during the early morning hours. Vocal activity may increase during the breeding season.
