The Kioea was a unique and robust Hawaiian honeyeater, notable for its drab, streaked brown plumage, short tail, and relatively straight, pointed bill, atypical for honeyeaters. It is now extinct.
Where to spot
Historically found in the dry 'koa' forests of Hawaii Island. Sadly, it is no longer possible to observe this species in the wild.
How to spot
This species is extinct and cannot be observed. Its morphology is known from a few preserved specimens.
When to spot
Last reliable sighting in 1859. No longer observable.

The Kioea was once considered a mystery due to its unusual appearance, initially placed in its own family, until DNA evidence later confirmed its relationship to the O'o birds.
