Spotted
The Huon Astrapia is a magnificent medium-sized bird-of-paradise, distinguished by the male's iridescent green-blue head, black body, and an exceptionally long, broad, and deeply notched black tail. It is an inhabitant of high-altitude montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Huon Peninsula in northeastern New Guinea. It inhabits montane cloud forests, typically at high elevations.
How to spot
Look for the male's iridescent head, black body, and particularly its very long, broad, and notched tail. Females are duller but also share the long tail. It can be challenging to spot in its dense habitat, so listening for calls is helpful.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round. Males display during the breeding season, often in the early morning.
The Huon Astrapia's impressively long and broad tail feathers are a key feature in its aerial displays and courtship rituals, often fluttering dramatically as it moves.
