Spotted
The Keel-billed Toucan is one of the most vividly colored toucans, famous for its enormous, multi-colored bill, painted in shades of green, blue, orange, and yellow. Its body is mostly black with a bright yellow throat. It is an icon of the Neotropical rainforests, where its loud croaking calls are frequently heard.
Where to spot
Native to humid tropical and subtropical forests, clearings, and plantations, from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Colombia and Venezuela.
How to spot
Look for its unmistakable, brightly colored bill as it perches conspicuously on exposed branches in the upper canopy. Listen for its deep, frog-like 'rrra-rrra-rrra' calls, often given by multiple birds in a group.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal and visible during the early morning and late afternoon. Breeding season typically occurs during the dry season (December-May).

Despite its imposing size and colorful appearance, the Keel-billed Toucan's bill is largely hollow, making it surprisingly lightweight and agile in flight.
