Spotted
The Crimson-rumped Toucanet is a vibrant species, easily identified by its bright crimson rump, contrasting with its otherwise green plumage and colorful bill. It is a resident of humid montane and cloud forests, where it feeds on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and cloud forests on the western slopes of the Andes in Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often frog-like or barking calls. Look for its green body and the bright crimson rump, especially when it flies. It often perches conspicuously on exposed branches in the mid to upper canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal and visible during the early morning hours and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season (varies by region).
