Spotted
The Kagu is a unique, critically endangered flightless bird endemic to the dense forests of New Caledonia. It is known for its pale grey plumage, long crest, and a distinctive 'barking' call. The Kagu is the only surviving member of its ancient family, a true living fossil.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Caledonia, primarily found in the dense, humid forests of the main island, Grande Terre. Restricted to protected national parks and reserves.
How to spot
Look for its pale grey plumage, long crest (often raised when alert), and reddish-orange legs and bill. Listen intently for its distinctive 'barking' or 'whistling' calls, often given in duets at dawn. Remain very quiet and patient in suitable forest habitat.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active at dawn and dusk. Observations are extremely difficult due to its rarity, shyness, and dense habitat. Guided tours in protected areas (like Parc de la Rivière Bleue) offer the best chance.

The Kagu has unique structures in its nostrils that allow it to filter out dust and debris when probing the forest floor for invertebrates, an adaptation for its ground-dwelling lifestyle.
