Spotted
This hybrid occurs when a Pacific Black Duck and a Chestnut Teal interbreed, both being common inhabitants of Australian wetlands. Their offspring display a blend of their parents' distinctive plumages.
Where to spot
Wetlands, estuaries, and coastal areas in Australia where both Pacific Black Ducks and Chestnut Teals are abundant.
How to spot
Look for a duck showing a mix of the dark brown, striped face of a Pacific Black Duck and the richer, chestnut tones of a Chestnut Teal, particularly on the flanks or breast. The speculum color might also be intermediate.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round, often within mixed flocks. Increased likelihood during breeding seasons when interactions between species might be higher.

Such hybrids can sometimes be fertile, further complicating field identification and demonstrating the close genetic relationship between these two Anas species.
