Spotted
This designation refers to a bird that is either a Plumed Whistling-Duck, a Wandering Whistling-Duck, or a hybrid between the two. Distinguishing them can be challenging, especially in areas where their ranges overlap.
Where to spot
Found in Australia, particularly in wetlands where both Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Wandering Whistling-Ducks are present. Also found in captive collections.
How to spot
Carefully compare features of both species: Plumed Whistling-Ducks have prominent pale plumes on their flanks and a more upright stance, while Wandering Whistling-Ducks have more distinctly barred flanks and a dark crown. Look for intermediate features if it's a hybrid. Listen for their distinct calls.
When to spot
Year-round in their native range, with movements influenced by water availability. Best observed during mornings or late afternoons.
The similar appearance and overlapping ranges of the Plumed and Wandering Whistling-Ducks can make field identification difficult, often requiring careful scrutiny of subtle plumage details.
