The Hooded Vulture is a small, relatively slender Old World vulture with a dark, hooded appearance and pale downy head. It is a common scavenger, often found near human settlements and markets in Africa.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, in various habitats from arid savannas to urban areas, often near human habitation and waste disposal sites.
How to spot
Look for its small size, dark brown body, and pale, downy head that appears 'hooded.' Often seen perched on buildings or trees, or scavenging on the ground, sometimes in large numbers.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen in towns and villages, especially around markets, or scavenging on roadsides.
