Endemic to the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), including Ile de la Gonâve. It inhabits moist broadleaf forests, pine forests, dry forests, and gardens, from lowlands to mountains.
How to spot
Look for the male's striking black and white striped head, bright yellow-orange breast and belly, and olive-green back. Females are duller but still show the distinct facial pattern. They are often found in the canopy of trees.

Resident year-round on Hispaniola. Active throughout the day, often seen foraging in fruiting trees.
