Spotted
The Western Wedgebill is a distinctive Australian songbird known for its unique wedged-shaped bill and repetitive, often mechanical-sounding call. It is typically found in arid and semi-arid scrublands.
Where to spot
Endemic to arid and semi-arid regions of inland Western Australia. It inhabits mulga and acacia scrublands.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, repetitive call, often described as 'joey-joey.' While somewhat secretive, they can sometimes be seen foraging on or near the ground in their preferred scrubby habitats.
When to spot
Active year-round in its arid habitat. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring and summer) but can be heard at other times. Best observed in early morning.
The 'wedgebill' name perfectly describes its stout, wedge-shaped bill, which is adapted for probing in the ground and vegetation for insects.
