The Nepal Cutia is a strikingly patterned babbler found in the eastern Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia. Males are particularly vibrant with rufous, black, and white plumage, while females are duller.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India) and parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Inhabits montane evergreen and oak forests, often in dense mid-canopy and understory.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often repeated, mournful whistles. Look for its methodical foraging movements along mossy branches and tree trunks. The male's bold pattern and the unique bill shape are key ID features.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Can be hard to spot but sometimes joins mixed-species flocks.
