The Hawaiian Hawk, or ʻIo, is the only native diurnal raptor in Hawaii. This magnificent bird is revered in Hawaiian culture and plays a crucial role as a top predator in its ecosystem.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Big Island of Hawaii, primarily in forested areas, but also found in open pastures and agricultural lands.
How to spot
Look for its broad wings and relatively short tail. Distinguish between its dark and light morphs. Its call is a high-pitched, two-note 'ʻee-oh' or 'ʻee-o'. Binoculars are helpful as they often perch high.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active during the day. Often seen soaring above forest canopies or perched on tall trees.

The Hawaiian Hawk is considered 'mana' (sacred) in Hawaiian culture and was traditionally reserved for royalty. It exists in two color morphs: a dark morph (all dark brown) and a light morph (dark brown above, pale below).
