Spotted
Hammond's Flycatcher is a small, grayish-green flycatcher of western North America, known for its preference for coniferous forests. It is one of the more challenging Empidonax species to identify.
Where to spot
Breeds in coniferous forests in mountainous regions of western North America. Winters in Mexico and Central America.
How to spot
Identification relies heavily on its habitat, subtle structural differences (short primary projection), and especially its faint, whistled calls, which are difficult to distinguish.
When to spot
Breeding: late spring to early summer in western North America. Migration: spring (April-May) and fall (August-September). Wintering: fall through spring in the Neotropics.

The shape of its bill, often described as 'short and stubby', is a subtle but helpful field mark for distinguishing it from similar Empidonax species.
