Spotted
The Guatemalan Ivory-billed Woodpecker is a large, impressive species with a distinctive creamy-white bill and a prominent crest. It is a resident of tropical and subtropical forests, known for its powerful foraging.
Where to spot
Historically found in Central America, from southern Mexico through Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, in humid evergreen forests.
How to spot
Look for its large size, overall dark plumage, prominent crest (red in males, black in females), and the diagnostic creamy-white bill. Listen for strong drumming and loud, distinctive calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours. Due to its rarity and potential endangerment, observation opportunities are limited, but it would be year-round in its habitat if present.

While its common name suggests a close relation to the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, some authorities consider it a subspecies of the Imperial Woodpecker or a distinct species within the Campephilus genus, highlighting taxonomic complexities.
