Spotted
The Speckled Fantail is a small, agile bird known for its subtly patterned plumage, often featuring fine speckling or mottling, particularly on the chest. Like other fantails, it is a highly active insectivore, constantly moving and fanning its tail as it forages. It is often found in dense forest environments.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Bismarck Archipelago, specifically New Britain and New Ireland, in Papua New Guinea. It prefers tropical moist montane forests, typically found at higher elevations.
How to spot
Search for it in the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Look for its active movements and tail-fanning, and use binoculars to observe the fine speckling on its plumage. Listen for its distinctive calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more visible during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging. It is a resident species, present year-round.
The subtle speckling on its plumage helps this fantail blend seamlessly into the dappled light of its forest habitat, making it challenging to spot despite its active nature.
