Spotted
The Grey-chested Kakamega, also known as the Grey-chested Illadopsis, is a shy and elusive bird of Central African rainforests. It is characterized by its dull olive-brown plumage and grey breast.
Where to spot
Found in rainforests of Central and East Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, DRC, Uganda, and Kenya, typically in the undergrowth of lowland and montane forests.
How to spot
Search in dense forest undergrowth. It is a very shy bird that often stays hidden. Listening for its distinctive calls, often a series of mournful whistles, is key to locating it. Patience is crucial for a visual.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Often more vocal during breeding season (varies by region). Best observed in early morning or late afternoon.
Its name 'Kakamega' comes from the Kakamega Forest in Kenya, a key stronghold for this species and one of the last remnants of East African rainforest.
