The Green Woodhoopoe is an iridescent, dark-colored bird found across Sub-Saharan Africa, known for its long, decurved red bill and long, graduated tail. Its plumage shimmers with shades of green, blue, and purple in sunlight.
Where to spot
Widespread across Sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal east to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. Inhabits woodlands, riverine forests, savannas with trees, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for groups of these birds foraging on tree trunks and branches, using their long bills to probe for insects. Their distinctive loud, chattering calls and iridescent plumage are key identifiers. Often hang upside down while foraging.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during daylight hours, often seen moving through trees in noisy flocks.
