Spotted
The Forest Scimitarbill is a medium-sized, dark-bodied bird with a strikingly long, decurved black bill, specialized for probing. It typically has a subtle metallic sheen on its plumage and is found in the dense forests of central Africa.
Where to spot
Distributed in central Africa, from Cameroon and Central African Republic east to Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Primarily inhabits dense lowland rainforests.
How to spot
Look for it quietly probing on tree trunks and branches, especially in the mid-story. Its very long, slender, decurved black bill is the most distinctive feature. It is generally less vocal than woodhoopoes, making it harder to locate by sound alone.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its forest habitat. Active during daylight hours, often foraging solitarily or in pairs.

Scimitarbills get their name from their long, curved bills, which are perfectly adapted for extracting insects and larvae from bark crevices and under moss, often by rapid jabbing motions.
