Spotted
The Great Sapphirewing is a large and robust hummingbird, notable for its brilliant blue wings and tail that give it a dazzling appearance. It is a striking inhabitant of the high Andes.
Where to spot
Found in high-altitude cloud forests, elfin forests, and páramo edges in the Andes, from Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
How to spot
Search for it feeding at large flowering shrubs and trees, often at forest edges or in clearings. Its large size and iridescent blue wings make it relatively easy to spot.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the day, particularly in the mornings when temperatures are cooler and nectar flow is often higher.
