Spotted
A small, plain warbler, generally uniform greyish-brown above and paler below, lacking strong markings. It has a short tail often held cocked.
Where to spot
Dry woodlands, particularly acacia and miombo woodlands, and dense scrub in East Africa, from Sudan to Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for its overall plain greyish appearance and wren-like posture. It is a skulking bird, often difficult to spot. Listen for its distinctive, often buzzing or rattling song, which is the best way to locate it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the early mornings. Breeding often correlates with local rainy seasons.

Its 'simplex' (simple) plumage makes it less conspicuous, allowing it to blend into the varied undergrowth of its woodland habitats.
