Spotted
The Gray-headed Spinetail is a small Furnariid characterized by a grayish head, which contrasts subtly with its brownish body. It prefers humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests and cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, from northern Venezuela through Colombia to Peru.
How to spot
Search the mid-story and sub-canopy of humid forests. Look for the grayish wash on its head and listen for its characteristic vocalizations.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often joining mixed-species flocks. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
The gray head pattern is often more pronounced in adult birds and can be a good feature for separating it from other spinetails in mixed-species flocks.
