High-altitude puna grasslands, semi-arid scrub, and rocky slopes in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Found at middle to high elevations.

Its pale breast is a good field mark. Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or trilling calls. Observe it foraging on the ground or low in bushes, often running quickly between cover.
