The Grey-crowned Babbler is a highly social and distinctive bird found in Australia and southern New Guinea. It is easily recognized by its prominent grey crown and noisy, cooperative behavior.
Where to spot
Widespread across northern and eastern Australia, extending into southern New Guinea, inhabiting open woodlands, mallee, and riparian areas.
How to spot
Look for groups foraging noisily on the ground, flicking leaf litter. Identify by their grey crown, long decurved bill, and distinctive, often 'chattering' or 'wa-woo' calls. Their large, domed stick nests are also characteristic.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen foraging in noisy groups on the ground.
