The Grey-backed Shrike is a widespread and variable shrike species found across Asia, known for its grey back and black mask. It is a migratory bird in northern parts of its range, moving south for winter. This predatory bird inhabits open country with scattered bushes.
Where to spot
Widespread across Asia, breeding from Central Asia to China and wintering south to India, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East. Found in open country, scrubland, grasslands with scattered trees, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Spot it perched upright on an exposed branch, fence post, or wire, scanning for prey. Identify it by its grey back, black eye-mask, and often white supercilium. Its sharp, often harsh calls are also characteristic.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season in its northern range (late spring to summer) or during migration and winter in its southern range (autumn to spring).
