Spotted
The Savannah Sparrow is a common and widespread grassland sparrow across North America, characterized by its streaky plumage and often a yellowish lore (spot in front of the eye).
Where to spot
Widespread across North America, breeding from Alaska and Canada south through much of the U.S. and Mexico. Winters across the southern U.S. and Central America. Found in grasslands, salt marshes, and open fields.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open grassy areas. Note the streaky plumage and often the yellowish eyebrow or lore. Listen for its buzzy, insect-like song.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range, and during migration (spring and autumn) in other areas. Most visible during breeding season when males sing conspicuously.

This sparrow's 'tink' call is often described as sounding like two pebbles being tapped together.
