Spotted
The Mountain Brushfinch is a common and widespread songbird found in the Andes of South America. It is characterized by its streaky brown plumage and a distinct facial pattern with a rufous crown.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid montane forests of the Andes, from Venezuela south to Bolivia. Inhabits forest understory, edges, and secondary growth.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on or near the ground in dense vegetation. The rufous crown and streaky underparts are good identification clues. Listen for its strong, often repetitive song.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, which varies geographically but often aligns with the local rainy season.
