Spotted
The Gorgeted Wood Quail (Odontophorus strophium) is an endangered wood quail distinguished by a prominent white gorget or band across its throat. It is a reclusive forest dweller, rarely seen.
Where to spot
Endemic to the East Andes of Colombia, found in high-altitude cloud and montane forests, often in very restricted and fragmented areas.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive white gorget. Its resonant calls are important for detection. Due to its endangered status and shy habits, sightings are very rare and require immense patience and a keen ear.
When to spot
Best observed at dawn or dusk when it might venture to forest edges or clearings to feed. It is a resident species, present year-round.
