Spotted
The Gorgeted Metaltail is a striking hummingbird characterized by its brilliant iridescent throat patch, or gorget, which varies in color depending on the subspecies. It inhabits high-altitude Andean environments, where it is a common sight.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the high-altitude cloud forests and paramo edges of the Andes, specifically in Colombia and Ecuador. It prefers humid, temperate zones with abundant flowering plants.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive gorget, which can appear fiery orange-red, pinkish-purple, or even blue depending on the light and subspecies. Watch for its energetic feeding at various flowers and listen for its high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the year, especially frequenting flowering shrubs and trees during daylight hours. Early mornings and late afternoons can be particularly good for observations.
