Spotted
The Dusky Barbthroat is a dark and often elusive hermit hummingbird, primarily found in the Guianas region. Its plumage is generally dusky or dark brown, lacking the bright iridescence of many other hummingbirds.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid lowland forests of northeastern South America, particularly within the Guiana Shield (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and parts of Brazil). It prefers dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Look for a dark, medium-sized hermit with a straight bill, often staying deep within the understory. Its identification relies on its overall dark coloration, typical hermit shape and flight, and geographic location. Listening for its calls can also help locate it.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but often stays within dense foliage, making it somewhat challenging to spot. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
Its scientific name 'niger' directly translates to 'black,' referring to its generally dark, somber plumage.
