Spotted
The Spangled Tanager is a truly dazzling bird, with iridescent blue and black plumage that appears to be covered in shimmering 'spangles' or flecks of light. It's a Central American jewel.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and mature secondary growth from Central America to western South America.
How to spot
Look for it in fruiting trees and at feeders. Its brilliant, shimmering plumage is unmistakable and a joy to behold.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most observable in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging for fruit.
The iridescence on its plumage is so strong that the colors seem to change and sparkle as the bird moves in the light, giving it a 'spangled' appearance.
