The Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch is a striking and localized species of the high Peruvian Andes, notable for its rich chestnut breast and contrasting head patterns.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes of central Peru, typically above 3,000 meters, in puna grasslands and rocky, shrubby slopes.
How to spot
Scan rocky slopes and areas with tussock grass. Its chestnut breast is a good field mark, but it can be elusive. Patience and a keen eye will help distinguish it from other ground-dwelling finches.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the mornings when activity is higher and it is more likely to be foraging in the open.
This species often forages on or near the ground in rocky, open areas with scattered vegetation, frequently found at very high altitudes, enduring harsh mountain climates.
