Spotted
The Western Wattled Cuckooshrike is a striking and distinctive bird found in the Upper Guinea rainforests of West Africa. It is unique for the fleshy wattles around its eyes.
Where to spot
Restricted to humid primary rainforests in West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Ghana.
How to spot
Search in undisturbed rainforests. Look for its dark plumage and the unmistakable orange-yellow wattles. Patience is key, as it can be difficult to spot high in the canopy. Listening for its calls may help.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often observed in the mid to upper canopy. It can be elusive.
