The Geelvink Pygmy-Parrot is a tiny and vibrant parrot endemic to two islands in the Geelvink Bay off New Guinea. It is a specialist feeder on lichens and fungi.
Where to spot
Forests and coconut plantations on Numfor and Biak Islands in Geelvink Bay, West Papua, Indonesia.
How to spot
Look for its very small size, green plumage, and distinctive blue crown and yellow cheeks (Biak subspecies) or blue crown and throat (Numfor subspecies). Often seen clinging to tree trunks and branches.
When to spot
Active during the day. Observable year-round. Often found foraging on tree trunks and branches.
Its exceptionally small size and unique foraging behavior on tree bark make it a challenging but rewarding species to observe for dedicated birdwatchers.
