Spotted
The Grey Fantail is a widespread and common bird, celebrated for its acrobatic flight and distinctive fan-shaped tail. Its plumage is typically shades of grey and white, often with a prominent white throat. It is an extremely active insectivore, constantly flitting and twisting as it hunts.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across Australia, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. It inhabits a broad range of wooded habitats, from forests and woodlands to urban parks and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive fan-shaped tail, often held partially open or fully fanned, and its constant, jerky movements. Its high-pitched, musical 'cheet-cheet-cheet' call is a key identifier and often heard before the bird is seen.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, typically resident in most areas, but some populations undertake seasonal migrations. Observable year-round.
