Endemic to the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests, preferring dense undergrowth and forest edges.

Look for its constant, erratic movements and tail-fanning. Its high-pitched, chattering calls can help in locating it within the dense foliage. Binoculars are useful for observation.

Active during daylight hours, often more vocal and visible in the early morning and late afternoon. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
