The Forest Canary is a medium-sized canary with a relatively dull, streaky green plumage, contrasting with a yellowish rump and wing-bars. Males are slightly brighter.
Where to spot
Found in southern Africa, particularly in South Africa and Lesotho. It inhabits indigenous evergreen forests, often in damp ravines or along forest edges.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and canopy of dense forests. Listen intently for its beautiful, complex song, which is often the best way to locate it.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its resident range. Most vocal and active during the breeding season (typically southern hemisphere spring/summer).
