Spotted
The Tibetan Rosefinch is a robust, high-altitude finch found on the Tibetan Plateau. Males have a deep rosy-red plumage, particularly on the head, breast, and rump, contrasting with a streaky brown body. Females are duller.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding high mountain ranges, including parts of Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and China. It inhabits alpine and subalpine meadows, rocky slopes, and sparse scrub at very high elevations.
How to spot
Search for this finch in vast, open, high-altitude landscapes above the treeline. The male's deep rosy coloration is unmistakable. Listen for its strong, whistled calls and varied, melodious song, often given from rocks or low bushes.
When to spot
A year-round resident, but capable of altitudinal movements. Most active during the short summer breeding season when males are singing and conspicuous.
