The Flame-rumped Tanager is a strikingly beautiful species, with males displaying a vibrant orange-red rump and shoulder patches against a black body. Females are yellow and black.
Where to spot
Found in humid lowland and foothill forests, secondary growth, and forest borders in western South America.
How to spot
Scan the mid-story and canopy. The brilliant rump color is often the first thing noticed, especially on the male.
When to spot
Present throughout the year. Early morning is ideal for observation as it forages actively.
