Spotted
The Rufous-sided Warbling Finch is a charming and widespread species found in the temperate and high-Andean regions of South America. It is characterized by its rufous flanks and melodic song.
Where to spot
High Andes from southern Peru south through Bolivia and Argentina, inhabiting shrublands, open woodlands, and edges of agricultural areas, typically between 1,500 and 3,800 meters.
How to spot
Look for it in shrubby areas, often foraging on the ground or in low bushes. Listen for its distinctive warbling song. The rufous flanks are a key identification feature to look for.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal during the breeding season (austral spring and summer), making it easier to find by sound.
Its 'warbling' song is a delightful characteristic, often heard from low shrubs or open perches, making it easier to locate than some of its more elusive relatives in dense vegetation.
