Spotted
The Eastern Scrub Robin is a shy and secretive ground-dwelling bird found in the dense forests of New Guinea and parts of Australia. Its cryptic brown plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into the leaf litter.
Where to spot
Found in New Guinea and northeastern Australia (Cape York Peninsula), inhabiting dense tropical rainforests, often in the deep undergrowth.
How to spot
Listen carefully for its distinctive, often mimic-laden song from dense undergrowth. Remain very still and scan the leaf litter. It can be incredibly difficult to spot as it walks quietly on the forest floor.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk when it is more vocal. Its secretive nature makes it a challenge to observe.
This robin is an expert at mimicking the calls of other birds, often incorporating a diverse repertoire of imitations into its own complex song.
