Spotted
The Chatham Islands Black Robin is a critically endangered species of robin endemic to the remote Chatham Islands of New Zealand. It is an entirely black bird, famous for its dramatic conservation recovery.
Where to spot
Critically endangered. Endemic to the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, currently restricted to predator-free islands such as Mangere Island and Little Mangere Island, inhabiting dense scrub and forest.
How to spot
Requires visiting its specific, highly protected island habitats. Look for an entirely black robin, often foraging on the ground among leaf litter. Its calls are typically soft, repeated whistles.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours, often foraging on the forest floor. Any observation is significant due to its rarity.
This species was brought back from the brink of extinction by a dedicated conservation effort, growing from a single breeding pair in 1980 to a healthy population, primarily due to the efforts of 'Old Blue', the last breeding female.
