The Eastern Imperial Eagle is a large, majestic raptor of open woodlands and steppes, closely related to the Spanish Imperial Eagle. Adults are dark with a golden crown and often white patches on the shoulders. This powerful hunter preys on medium-sized mammals and birds.
Where to spot
Breeds in scattered populations across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, favoring open country with mature trees or scattered forests. Northern populations migrate to warmer regions in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia for winter.
How to spot
Look for its dark brown body, prominent golden-buff head and nape, and often a few white patches on the shoulders (scapulars). In flight, it has broad, deep wings held flat or slightly arched, and a relatively straight-edged tail.
When to spot
Present on breeding grounds from spring to autumn. Migration periods in spring (March-April) and autumn (September-October) offer excellent opportunities to observe them, especially at bottleneck sites.

Historically revered as a symbol of power, the Eastern Imperial Eagle's decline across its range reflects broader environmental challenges. It often reuses the same large nest for many years, adding material each breeding season.
