Where to spot
Widespread across New Guinea (both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea) and extends into tropical northern Australia (Queensland and Northern Territory). Found in diverse habitats including rainforest, monsoon forest, mangroves, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its small size, entirely dark dusky-brown plumage, and slender, decurved bill. It is highly active, often moving rapidly through flowering trees and shrubs, sometimes hovering. Listen for its soft, high-pitched, sibilant calls.
